What Are the Symptoms of a Broken Dental Crown?

added on: July 24, 2024

Like most people, when you think of a dental crown, you’re probably thinking about how your Georgetown dentist uses them to repair your teeth. But what happens when your dental crown breaks? How long are they supposed to last? How long will they take to fix? Our July blog will answer all of these questions (and maybe even a few more).

How Does a Dental Crown Last?

Whether your crown has been worn down due to time or been broken by trauma, you’re probably wondering how your Georgetown dentist can fix it. Most dental crowns are carefully crafted to last you at least five to 15 years. Unfortunately, they can still be prone to breaks and damage, just like your natural teeth.

How Does Your Dentist Fix a Broken Dental Crown?

In most cases, having a crown break on you is necessarily considered a dental emergency. However, if there’s pain involved that cannot be treated with over-the-counter pain relievers, then you should contact our dental office in Georgetown right now so we can get you scheduled for an important appointment. It’s important to see us when you can to keep it from being further complicated. If you have a minor or hairline fracture, we can generally put some composite or tooth-colored filling material on it to add additional strength. However, some cases will require a completely new, customized crown or other dental work.

What Are Some Symptoms of a Damaged Crown?

For the most part, when your crown breaks, you’re going to be able to tell or feel the difference. Here are certain things you can be aware of in case you find yourself or someone else in this situation:

  • Broken Crown – If a large portion of your crown is now lost, then it’s going to be treated as broken.
  • Cracked Crown – Cracks like to occur going up, down, and all across the body of your dental crown. You should be able to see it with your naked eye.
  • Chipped Crown – If you see a piece of your crown break off, then it’s most likely going to be chipped.
  • Hairline Fractured Crown – These can be tricky to see; that’s why it’s important to schedule a visit with your dentist in Georgetown so we can detect your damage.

Any pain or discomfort near your dental crown means you should get help soon. We totally understand that having a broken crown is no fun. However, take comfort in knowing that we have the tools, training, and technology to get you back to feeling better in no time. Call us for your hassle-free consultation at (512) 572-3653.
